Triathlon shopping list: what to buy and bring

A triathlon needs more than race numbers and medals. You need supplies for the swim area, transition support, the bike course, the run course, registration, volunteers and emergency response. This list helps you buy and pack the practical items that are easy to overlook, including spare inner tubes, route signs, sanitation supplies and food. Check quantities against your participant count, course length and number of volunteer stations before race day.

Tips

  • Plan water and food by station, not just by total attendance. Set aside tables, snacks, sandwiches and hand sanitizer for every staffed refreshment point, then add a separate reserve for late finishers.
  • Pack a dedicated swim-safety box with a rescue buoy, emergency towels, first-aid supplies and the swim-course markers. Keep it at the water access point instead of leaving it in the main registration area.
  • Prepare a bike-repair kit before participants arrive. Include a pump, spare inner tubes and tire-repair tools, and place the kit where course volunteers can reach it quickly.
  • Bring more paperwork storage than you expect to need. Use clipboards, document boxes, lanyards, check-in forms, waiver forms and participant information cards so registration does not depend on loose sheets.
  • Separate course signage from volunteer-post signs and pack both by location. Mark the swim, bike and run sections clearly, and keep spare route signs available for weather damage or last-minute adjustments.

Frequently asked questions

What supplies do I need for a triathlon?
Plan supplies for registration, swim safety, bike repairs, course marking, refreshments, first aid and volunteer coordination. For each station, prepare its own table, signs and operating materials, then keep a reserve kit for the finish area.
How much food and drink should I buy for a triathlon?
Base the amount on your participant count, volunteers and expected race duration. Provide food and drinks for every water station, add supplies for the registration and finish areas, and keep enough reserve for at least the final hour of arrivals.
What should be in a triathlon bike repair kit?
Include at least one bicycle pump, spare inner tubes and tire-repair tools at the main support point. If the course is long or has several access points, prepare additional repair kits rather than relying on one central box.
When should I pack triathlon supplies?
Pack paperwork, signage and volunteer materials at least 1 day before the event. Inspect safety gear, repair equipment and water-station supplies again on race morning before participants arrive.
