What you need for a Christmas light parade
A Christmas light parade needs more than lights for the participants. You will also need safe route marking, power and battery backups, hot drinks, snacks and a practical setup at the start and finish. This shopping list covers the equipment and supplies to buy or bring, from LED string lights and reflective vests to thermos flasks and traffic barriers. Check what can be borrowed before shopping, especially tables, tents and cable reels.

Tips
- Plan at least one visible light source for every parade group or vehicle, plus spare batteries for battery-powered lights. Test every string light before the event and keep replacement batteries at the information desk.
- For the refreshment point, allow roughly one hot drink per person, with extra capacity for volunteers and delays. Use thermos flasks for serving and keep kettles available if you need to make more during the evening.
- Bring enough route-control equipment for every decision point: traffic cones, barriers, route signs and marker tape. Give each traffic controller a reflective vest and flashlight baton so they remain visible in the dark.
- Pack power equipment before the event rather than relying on one socket. Take extension cords, power strips and cable reels, and cover or secure cables where people cross the start or finish area.
- Allow setup time for tables, tents and decorations before participants arrive. Christmas wreaths, trees, baubles, ribbon and bunting should be packed separately from lighting equipment so they are quick to find in cold or low-light conditions.
Frequently asked questions
- How many lights do I need for a Christmas light parade?
- Plan at least one clearly visible light source for each participating group, vehicle or walking section, then bring spare LED lights and batteries. The exact total depends on how many participants you have and how long the route is.
- How much hot chocolate or tea should I buy for a Christmas light parade?
- Allow one hot drink per attendee, plus about 10% extra for volunteers, children asking for a refill and delays. For 100 people, prepare capacity for approximately 110 drinks.
- How many traffic cones and barriers do I need?
- Count every road entry, crossing and point where the route changes, then add at least two cones per marked point. Use barriers where cones alone cannot stop vehicles from entering the route.
- When should I buy batteries and test the parade lights?
- Buy or collect batteries at least 3β7 days before the parade and test every light during that week. Do a final battery check on the day, keeping the spare batteries and flashlights at the start area.
