What you need for a walk

A walk needs more than route maps and refreshments. You will need clear signs, checkpoint supplies, registration materials, safety equipment and a way to keep volunteers connected. Plan drinks and food for the full group, then add practical items for changing weather, low light and minor injuries. This shopping list covers the equipment and consumables used to set up the start, mark the route and run the finish area smoothly.

Tips

  • Plan route supplies before shopping: count every turn, crossing and checkpoint, then add spare route arrows, cones and cable ties for replacements on the day.
  • Give each checkpoint its own clipboard, route map, waterproof marker and pens. Pack these together so volunteers are not searching for supplies after participants have started.
  • Provide reflective vests and walkie-talkies for route leaders and checkpoint volunteers. Charge every radio and power bank the day before, and pack the correct charging cables.
  • For refreshments, prepare enough reusable cups, plates and cutlery for the registered group plus at least 10% extra. Keep drinks chilled in coolers and use thermos flasks for hot drinks.
  • Do not leave lighting and weather protection until the last check. Bring headlamps or LED lights for dark sections, emergency blankets for cold conditions, and tents or tables for exposed registration areas.
