Five-Day Walk shopping list

A five-day walk needs more than food and water. You need supplies for marking routes, running registration, supporting walkers at care stations and keeping volunteers connected across the course. This shopping list covers practical equipment such as coolers, water dispensers, route arrows, barrier tape, clipboards and power supplies. Check quantities against your participant numbers, the number of care stations and the length of each day’s route before you buy.

Tips

  • Prepare route supplies separately for each of the five days. Count the route arrows, signs, ribbons and cable ties needed for every section, then pack them in labelled boxes so volunteers do not sort materials at the start.
  • Plan one registration setup for the start area and separate equipment for care stations. Tables, chairs, clipboards, waterproof markers, bib numbers and wristbands are easy to overlook when shopping is focused mainly on refreshments.
  • Bring cooling and drinking equipment to every support point that needs it. Use coolers and water dispensers where walkers stop, and allow extra capacity for hot weather rather than buying only for the forecast average.
  • Check power requirements before the event week. Coffee machines, kettles and phone chargers may need extension cords and power strips; test the setup at least one day before the first walking day.
  • Pack route-marking tools in a waterproof field kit. Include the hammer, pole holders, cones, barrier tape and cable ties, and keep spare markers and route maps with the team responsible for checking signs each morning.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for a five-day walk?
Plan for route marking, registration, refreshments, communication and participant identification. Core items include route arrows and signs, barrier tape, cones, route maps, tables, clipboards, bib numbers, wristbands, coolers, water dispensers and walkie-talkies.
How many route arrows do I need for a five-day walk?
There is no fixed number because it depends on the route length and number of junctions. Count every turn and route point for each of the five days, then add at least 10% spare arrows and signs for loss or damage.
When should I buy supplies for a five-day walk?
Buy reusable equipment and route supplies at least 2–3 weeks before the event. Finish the consumables order 3–5 days beforehand, after checking registrations, dietary requirements and the weather forecast.
What equipment is needed at the start and finish?
Allow space for registration tables, folding chairs, a registration desk, waste bins and the start and finish arch. Add power supplies, phone chargers, a megaphone and route maps, and test all equipment at least one day before opening.
