Sikh Wedding Shopping List

A Sikh wedding needs more than ceremony clothing and rings. This shopping list covers the practical setup for the Gurdwara arrangements, baraat, ceremony room and reception, including serving equipment, seating, storage and hot-drink supplies. Plan tableware for every confirmed guest, then add a small buffer for breakage and unexpected attendees. Check dietary requirements before ordering groceries and confirm which items the venue or Gurdwara already provides.

Tips

  • Count dinner plates, dessert plates, bowls, glasses and cutlery against the final guest list, then add around 10% extra so service does not stop when something is dropped or misplaced.
  • For buffet service, match each main dish with a serving platter, serving spoon or pair of tongs. Prepare at least two food warmers for hot dishes and confirm that induction plates are allowed at the venue.
  • Allow one water glass per guest at the table, plus extra pitchers for refills. For tea and coffee, plan one tea glass or coffee cup per expected drinker and keep thermos flasks ready if service continues after the meal.
  • Provide coat and shoe storage before guests arrive: one clothes rack and one shoe rack may not be enough for a large congregation. Add waste bins near the buffet, drinks station and ceremony-room exit.
  • Lay out wedding clothing and rings before the venue opens, and keep ceremony documents, printed programs and microphones together in one labelled box. Test the wireless microphones and speakers before guests enter.

Frequently asked questions

What tableware do I need for a Sikh wedding?
For each confirmed guest, plan one dinner plate, one dessert plate, one bowl, one water glass and one set of dinner cutlery. Add roughly 10% extra, especially for plates and glasses used during a buffet reception.
How much serving equipment is needed for a Sikh wedding buffet?
Give every hot or cold dish its own serving platter, serving spoon or tongs. Prepare at least two food warmers for hot dishes, and increase that number when several dishes must stay warm at the same time.
When should I buy groceries and wedding supplies?
Order durable tableware, furniture and kitchen equipment at least 2–3 weeks before the wedding. Buy perishable groceries close to the event, usually 1–2 days beforehand, after dietary requirements and the final guest list are confirmed.
What should I bring for drinks at a Sikh wedding?
Plan at least one water glass per guest, with pitchers for refills, and provide tea glasses, coffee cups, thermos flasks and a coffee machine if hot drinks are served. Keep extra glasses and cups available for second servings.
