Tips

  • Count every place setting against the final guest number, then add 5 extra dinner plates, glasses, forks, knives, and spoons for breakage or unexpected guests.
  • Allow one Seder plate per table, one Kiddush cup for each table or leader, and enough matzah plates and serving platters to keep food moving without passing everything by hand.
  • Buy matzah at least 3–5 days before the celebration and keep it sealed in a dry storage bin; do not leave opened packets where they can absorb moisture or odors.
  • Check wine, grape juice, cooking ingredients, and packaged foods for expiry dates before shopping. Keep chilled items refrigerated and collect fresh vegetables within 24 hours of preparation.
  • Set aside kitchen supplies before cooking: cutting boards, sharp chef’s knives, measuring cups, mixing bowls, aluminum foil, cling film, oven mitts, and storage containers are commonly needed after the shopping is finished.

Frequently asked questions

How much matzah do I need per person for Passover?
Plan at least 3 pieces of matzah per person for the Seder, with extra for children, breakage, and the meal. For 20 guests, start with about 60 pieces and add a spare packet or two depending on packet size.
How much wine or grape juice should I buy for a Passover Seder?
Allow four small cups per adult for the Seder, plus extra for guests who want wine with the meal. A 750 ml bottle provides roughly 12 small 60 ml pours, so 20 adults need at least 7 bottles for the four cups alone.
When should I buy Passover groceries?
Buy shelf-stable items, matzah, wine, and disposable or serving supplies 3–5 days ahead. Buy fresh produce 1–2 days before the event and check refrigerated storage before collecting anything that needs chilling.
How many plates and glasses do I need for a Passover celebration?
Provide one dinner plate, deep plate, dessert plate, bowl, water glass, wine glass, fork, knife, and spoon per guest, plus 5 extra place settings for every 20 guests. Add serving spoons and platters separately so table settings are not used for buffet service.
