What to Buy for a Night Run

A night run needs more than bibs and finish medals. You need enough lighting to mark the route, visible clothing for volunteers, reliable power for registration and clear supplies for the finish area. This shopping list covers the practical equipment and consumables behind the plan, including drinks, cups, signs and first-aid support. Check quantities against your runner count, volunteer team and route length, then shop early enough to test lights, charge radios and chill drinks before setup.

Tips

  • Plan route lighting in sections rather than buying only for the start and finish. Use reflective arrows and route signs throughout, then add headlamps or battery lanterns where the route is especially dark.
  • Count one race bib, bib strap and course map per registered runner, plus at least 5% spare bibs for late changes or printing errors. Print and sort the bib numbers before registration opens.
  • For the finish area, allow 2 to 3 drinks per runner during the first hour after finishing. Chill the drinks in advance and provide reusable cups, thermos flasks and soup ladles if hot refreshments are being served.
  • Give every course volunteer a reflective vest and a reliable way to communicate. Charge all walkie-talkies the day before, and keep power banks available for phones used along the route.
  • Do not leave power and lighting until race day. Bring extension cords, power strips and suitable lights, then test the laptop, printer, timer and megaphone together at least 24 hours before the run.
