What to buy for a Liberation barbecue
A Liberation barbecue needs more than meat and charcoal. Plan food and drinks around the number of guests, then check tableware, serving equipment, shelter and lighting before shopping. Dietary requirements should be collected before you set the menu, and chilled drinks need cooler space on the day. This checklist helps you buy the practical items that are easy to overlook when preparing an outdoor barbecue.

Tips
- Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then about one drink per person per additional hour. Buy extra water and keep enough cooler space for drinks to chill before guests arrive.
- Plan roughly 250β350 g of meat or vegetarian barbecue food per adult, plus salads, bread and snacks. Add 10β15% extra if guests will be eating over several hours.
- Count one plate, bowl, glass, fork, knife and spoon per guest, then add at least 10% spare tableware. Set aside coffee cups and serving platters so they do not disappear into the kitchen during service.
- Check the barbecue, gas cylinders and power equipment at least 3 days beforehand. Test extension cords, power strips, speaker and string lights before putting them outside.
- Buy or reserve party tents, tables and chairs before the final week, especially if rain is possible. Put up lighting and decorations before the barbecue starts, including Dutch flags, orange pennants and lanterns.
