What you need for a last-man-standing run
A last-man-standing run needs more than race bibs and medals. You need clearly marked course sections, visible start and finish points, equipment for timing and announcements, and supplies for volunteers and runners who may stay for hours. Plan quantities around your number of participants, then add a small reserve for damaged bibs, missing batteries and extra drinks. This checklist helps you shop before setup day instead of discovering gaps when runners are already arriving.

Tips
- Buy one bib number and one bib strap per participant, plus at least 5% extra for replacements. Pack the numbers in order before registration opens so volunteers can hand them out quickly.
- Allow enough ribbon, cones and directional signs to mark every turn and hazard on the course. Keep a separate bundle of spare marking material at the start area for repairs during the run.
- Prepare one staff vest for every volunteer working on the course, start area or finish area. Give traffic-point volunteers a megaphone or clear communication method before runners set off.
- Bring spare batteries for every stopwatch, megaphone, lantern, headlamp and other battery-powered device. Test the timing equipment and printer at least one day before the event, not during registration.
- Plan drinks for the full duration of the event, not just the start. Chill the first supply in coolers and keep additional drinks in reserve; use thermos flasks if volunteers need hot drinks during a long setup or finish period.
Frequently asked questions
- How many race bibs do I need for a last-man-standing run?
- Buy one bib number and one bib strap for each registered runner. Add at least 5% extra, so a field of 100 runners means 105 bibs and straps.
- How much course marking tape do I need?
- Measure the course and count every turn, crossing and section that needs visible marking before shopping. Add roughly 10% extra ribbon so you can repair markings or replace tape that comes loose.
- How many volunteers need staff vests?
- Provide one vest for every volunteer who will be visible to runners or the public, including course marshals and start-finish staff. For 20 volunteers, prepare 20 vests rather than sharing them between shifts.
- When should I test the timing and announcement equipment?
- Test the laptop, printer, stopwatches, megaphone, speakers, extension cords and power strips at least 24 hours before the run. Check spare batteries at the same time and repeat a short sound and timing test during setup.
