What you need for a fox hunt

A fox hunt needs more than masks and clues. You will need one complete route pack for each team, clear markers at every station, timing equipment for supervisors, and a reliable setup for registration and refreshments. Plan the shopping around your team count, then add a small spare supply of maps, score sheets, pens and cups. Check power, lighting and weather protection before the event day so the start, finish and fox stations are ready on time.

Tips

  • Prepare one clipboard, route map, score sheet, assignment pack and writing set for every team. Print at least two spare route maps and score sheets in case of rain, loss or an extra registration.
  • Use team bibs, ribbons or clear numbers that can be seen from several metres away. Add cones and markers at turns, crossings and fox stations rather than relying on verbal directions.
  • Give each fox station its own mask, assignment cards, stopwatch and communication option. A megaphone helps at the start and finish, while portable speakers are useful only where power and weather protection are already checked.
  • For an outdoor route, bring party tents or another covered area for registration, the buffet and the finish point. Pack LED lamps or string lights and test extension cords and power strips before participants arrive.
  • Buy drinks and serving supplies for the registered headcount, then keep coolers for cold drinks and thermos flasks for hot drinks. Put reusable cups, plates, cutlery and serving platters at the reception or buffet table before the first team leaves.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to buy for a fox hunt?
You need route maps, score sheets, assignment cards, team bibs, fox masks, cones, ribbons, markers, clipboards, stopwatches and prizes. For the practical side, plan tables, seating, lighting, coolers, cups and serving equipment for the full participant count.
How many route maps and score sheets should I print?
Print one complete set for each team, including a route map and score sheet, plus at least two spare sets. Give supervisors and fox stations their own copies so they are not sharing the teams’ paperwork.
What equipment does each fox station need?
Each station should have its assignment cards, a fox mask or other role marker, a stopwatch and a way to record results. Pack the materials by station at least one day before the hunt to prevent items being left at the start point.
What should I arrange before the fox hunt starts?
Check the route and power setup at least one day beforehand, then chill drinks and pack team materials before the event day. On the day itself, allow enough setup time for the registration table, start and finish points, fox stations, lighting and buffet.
