What to buy for a 6-hour run
A six-hour run needs more than bibs and a finish arch. Participants will need regular access to drinks, snacks and clear course information, while the team needs equipment for timing, communication, lighting and waste. This shopping list covers the supplies behind the event plan, including materials that are easy to overlook until setup day. Check quantities against your participant numbers, course length and expected weather before you shop.

Tips
- Plan drinks and snacks for the full six hours, not just the start. Add extra coolers and supplies if runners can pass the aid point repeatedly or if warm weather is forecast.
- Buy or prepare one bib number and at least two safety pins per participant. Print the participant list and race numbers early enough to fix missing registrations before event day.
- Test the electronic timekeeping system, laptop, printer and stopwatches before setup. Pack extension cords and power strips with the timing and sound equipment rather than looking for them on site.
- Check lighting before the course inspection. LED work lights, headlamps and string lights may be needed for early setup, late finishers or poorly lit sections of the course.
- Label communication and crowd-control equipment before volunteers arrive. Walkie-talkies, mobile phones, cones, course tape, barriers and directional arrows should be assigned to specific posts instead of left in one shared pile.
Frequently asked questions
- What do I need for a 6-hour run?
- Plan supplies for hydration, snacks, race numbers, safety pins, timing, communication, course marking, lighting, waste and participant comfort. The equipment list includes 48 items, from coolers and tables to stop mats and a sound system.
- How many safety pins do I need for a 6-hour run?
- Allow two safety pins per runner, so 200 participants require at least 400 pins. Keep a separate reserve for replacements and damaged bibs.
- How much food and drink should I buy for a 6-hour run?
- Use your participant count, expected laps and weather to set the quantity, then add a reserve rather than shopping only for the opening hour. Chill the drinks and prepare snacks before participants arrive so the aid point can operate continuously.
- When should I buy supplies for a 6-hour run?
- Buy durable equipment and printed materials at least one week before the event, then complete the food and drink shop 1β2 days beforehand. Check the weather forecast and inspect the course again before finalising the quantities.
