What to Buy for a 5K Run
A 5K run needs more than bib numbers and a finish arch. You will need supplies for registration, route marking, hydration, timing, traffic control and first aid. This shopping list covers the items to buy or collect before race day, including equipment that is easy to overlook, such as extension cords, coolers and emergency blankets. Check quantities against your participant list, then shop early enough to sort bibs, prepare signs and brief volunteers before the start.

Tips
- Plan at least one water cup per runner at each planned drink station, plus a reserve supply for volunteers and spills. Fill coolers shortly before the start so water stays usable throughout the race.
- Prepare one bib number and one bib number band for every registered runner, then print a small number of spare bibs. Sort them in participant-list order before registration opens.
- Use route arrows, traffic cones, barrier tape and folding signs together at crossings and turns. Walk or cycle the full 5K route before race day to check that every sign is visible from a safe distance.
- Charge phones, walkie-talkies and wireless microphones the night before, and pack extension cords and power strips with the sound system. Assign at least one person to keep the participant list and route map available at the start and finish.
- Keep first aid kits and emergency blankets at the finish area and with the route team, rather than leaving everything at registration. Bring enough volunteer vests for every traffic marshal so runners and drivers can identify them quickly.
Frequently asked questions
- How many water cups do I need for a 5K run?
- Start with one cup per participant at each water station, then add 10β20% for volunteers, spills and runners taking a second cup. For 100 runners and one station, prepare about 110β120 cups.
- What should I buy for 5K race registration?
- Prepare one bib number and one bib number band per runner, plus pens, printed participant lists and a small supply of spare bibs. Sort the bibs before race day so registration does not become a last-minute task.
- How many medals should I order for a 5K run?
- Order one medal and one medal ribbon for every registered finisher, with a small reserve if your budget allows. Confirm the participant count after registration closes and place the order early enough for delivery before race day.
- When should I prepare the 5K route signs and safety equipment?
- Check and assemble route arrows, cones, barrier tape and folding signs at least one day before the run. Walk the route again on race morning, because signs can move or disappear and traffic conditions may change.
