What to buy for a youth walk
A youth walk needs more than snacks and water. You will need supplies for registration, route marking, rest stops, supervision and the reception afterwards. Buy or gather items early enough to check that every station has what it needs, including printed route maps, visibility equipment and first aid supplies. This list covers the practical materials to prepare before participants arrive and during the walk.

Tips
- Prepare one route pack per participant, plus at least 10% extra, so late registrations or damaged materials do not leave anyone without a map or identification.
- Plan refreshments for each rest stop as well as the reception. Chill drinks in coolers ahead of time, and keep hot water or drinks in thermos flasks where kettles and power are available.
- Count registration supplies against your expected attendance: prepare one participant form, name sticker and wristband per person, with 5 to 10 spare sets.
- Mark the route before participants arrive. Use arrows, wayfinding signs, cones and barrier tape at every turn or confusing section, then walk the route once more to check that nothing has moved.
- Assign safety equipment by station rather than leaving it in one box. Each supervisor should have access to a mobile phone, while first aid kits and safety vests remain easy to reach throughout the walk.
Frequently asked questions
- What supplies do I need for a youth walk?
- Prepare route maps, arrows, signs, cones, barrier tape and markers for the route. You also need registration materials, safety equipment, refreshments, reusable tableware and reception furniture.
- How many route maps should I print for a youth walk?
- Print one map per participant, plus at least 10% extra. For 50 walkers, prepare 55 maps so you have copies for late registrations, supervisors and replacements.
- How much registration material do I need?
- Prepare one participant form, name sticker and wristband per registered walker, then add 5 to 10 spare sets. Pack pens separately and bring at least two complete pen sets for the registration table.
- When should I prepare the youth walk supplies?
- Finish shopping and collect borrowed materials at least 3 to 5 days before the walk. Print forms and maps after registrations close, then check and assemble route packs the day before.
