What you need for a winter walk
A winter walk needs more than snacks and a printed route. Prepare hot drinks, soup, serving supplies and enough lighting for the start, finish and rest stops. You will also need visible route markers, basic safety equipment and weather-resistant setup materials. Use this list alongside the plan so shopping, packing and collecting supplies are finished before participants arrive.

Tips
- Plan for two hot drinks per person if the walk lasts two to three hours, and add extra water for the start and rest stops. Fill thermoses shortly before departure so drinks stay hot.
- For soup, allow 300β400 ml per person, plus bread and serving portions. Check dietary requirements before shopping, then prepare enough bowls, spoons and mugs for the full participant list.
- Bring route arrows, signs and cones in a separate box, with markers and clipboards for last-minute changes. Pack at least 10% more route markers than your first estimate in case signs are damaged or moved.
- Winter light fades quickly, so pack LED lamps or battery lanterns for the registration table, rest area and finish area. Test every lamp and bring extension cords only where a safe power source is available.
- Pack a first aid kit where volunteers can reach it within a few minutes, not inside the main storage box. Keep barrier tape available for unsafe sections and recheck the route after the latest weather forecast.
Frequently asked questions
- What food and drinks do I need for a winter walk?
- Allow 300β400 ml of soup and about two hot drinks per person for a two- to three-hour walk. Add bread, water and extra portions for roughly 10% more people than the confirmed number.
- How many mugs and bowls should I bring for a winter walk?
- Bring one reusable mug and one soup bowl per participant, plus at least 10% extra for replacements and volunteers. Pack matching cutlery, plates and serving spoons so the rest stop can operate without washing up.
- What lighting do I need for a winter walk?
- Use one light source for the registration table, one for the rest area and one for the finish area as a minimum. Test the lamps on the day before the walk and bring spare batteries for every battery-powered lantern.
- When should I buy and pack supplies for a winter walk?
- Buy non-perishable supplies at least three to five days in advance and check the stock against the participant list. Buy fresh bread and prepare soup ingredients one day before, then fill thermoses and pack chilled items on the event day.
