What to Buy and Bring for a Walk
A walk needs more than route markers and water. You also need supplies for registration, checkpoints, breaks, communication and the finish area. Plan quantities around the number of participants, volunteers and checkpoints, and keep a small reserve for late registrations or damaged signs. Check power, transport and storage before shopping: kettles, coolers, tents and tables are easy to overlook until setup day.

Tips
- Plan one course map per volunteer team and one spare map for each checkpoint. Print route arrows and signs in reserve as well; allow roughly 10% extra because signs can be moved, lost or damaged.
- For drinks, prepare about 2β3 servings per participant for the first hour, then add more for longer routes or warm weather. Bring extra reusable cups, thermos flasks and coolers for checkpoints and the finish area.
- Count one bib number and one wristband per registered participant, plus at least 5β10% spare. Keep the numbers, registration list and pens together so starter groups can be checked quickly.
- Give each checkpoint a clear safety kit: route signs, cones, barrier tape, a charged mobile phone and a power bank. Reflective vests should cover every volunteer working near traffic or at dusk.
- Reserve tables, chairs, tents and waste bins for the busiest point, not the average point. Add extension cords and power strips only after checking where kettles, the speaker and other electrical equipment will be placed.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water and coffee do I need for a walk?
- Plan 2β3 drinks per person for the first hour, then increase the amount for longer walks or warm weather. Bring extra cups and keep drinks split between checkpoints and the finish area.
- How many route signs should I buy for a walk?
- The exact number depends on the route, turns and checkpoints, so count every decision point during the route walk-through. Add at least 10% spare signs and arrows for replacements on the day.
- How many bib numbers and wristbands do I need?
- Buy one bib number and one wristband per registered participant, plus 5β10% spare. This covers late registrations, damaged items and mistakes during distribution.
- What should I bring for walk volunteers?
- Provide each volunteer team with a course map, a charged mobile phone or walkie-talkie, a power bank and the signs or safety supplies for its post. Volunteers near roads should also wear reflective vests.
