What to buy for a veterans walk
A veterans walk needs more than food and water. You will need supplies for registration, route marking, traffic control, volunteer communication and a covered start or finish area. Plan quantities from the number of participants, volunteers and route stations rather than buying one set for the whole event. Check the route and forecast before shopping, because accessibility, distance and weather affect what you need to carry and where supplies must be placed.

Tips
- Prepare one start card or wristband for every registered participant, plus at least 10% extra for late registrations or replacements. Keep the participant list and spare cards at the registration desk.
- Allow one directional sign or arrow at every turn, crossing and confusing section of the route, then add two spare signs. Bring barrier tape, traffic cones and safety vests for each traffic-control point.
- Plan drinking water and refreshments by station, not only by headcount. Fill the coolers before volunteers leave, and keep enough reusable glasses, plates and cutlery for the largest meal or serving period.
- Give every route or traffic volunteer a safety vest and a way to communicate. Test the walkie-talkies, portable speaker, microphone, extension cords and power banks before the event starts.
- Pack a first aid kit, blankets, disposable gloves and flashlights where volunteers can reach them quickly. Put the first aid supplies at the start or finish area and confirm who is responsible for taking them along the route.
Frequently asked questions
- What supplies do I need for a veterans walk?
- Plan for route signs, arrows, barrier tape, traffic cones, safety vests, walkie-talkies and first aid kits. You will also need start cards, registration supplies, coolers, drinking glasses, catering tableware and equipment for announcements.
- How many start cards should I print for a veterans walk?
- Print one for every registered participant and add 10% extra. For 100 walkers, prepare at least 110 start cards so late registrations and damaged cards do not delay registration.
- How much safety equipment does each route station need?
- Give each station enough cones and barrier tape to make the hazard visible, plus one safety vest per volunteer. Provide at least one working communication device for every station or volunteer team, and keep one spare device available.
- When should I buy and prepare supplies for a veterans walk?
- Buy durable route and safety materials at least one week before the walk. Complete the final food, drink and weather-dependent shopping 1β2 days beforehand, then fill coolers and set out registration materials on the event day.
