What you need for a triathlon
A triathlon needs more than swim, bike, and run equipment. You also need clearly marked courses, safe transitions, participant identification, timing supplies, and practical gear for volunteers. This shopping list covers the equipment used to prepare the swim course, manage the bike and walking routes, run registration and timing, and support athletes at the finish. Check quantities against your participant count, course layout, and volunteer schedule before ordering. Arrange specialist items such as kayaks and timing equipment early, because they are often booked weeks ahead.

Tips
- Plan one swim cap, bib number, race bib strap, wristband, and timing chip per participant, plus at least 5% spares for damaged or missing items. Keep the spare set with registration rather than at the finish.
- Use enough swimming buoys and lane ropes to make the course visible from the water, and position life rings where safety staff can reach them quickly. Confirm the number of kayaks, paddles, and trained water-safety volunteers at least two weeks before race day.
- Allow one route arrow at every turn and add kilometer markers along the walking course. Bring extra arrows and traffic cones for last-minute changes after checking the route and weather forecast.
- Prepare separate supplies for registration, timing, and the finish area: clipboards and bibs at check-in, the time registration system and stopwatches at timing points, and medal ribbons and finish medals at the finish arch.
- Count reflective vests, whistles, and traffic-control equipment by volunteer post, not just by total volunteer number. Pack at least one spare vest and whistle per course section so a late replacement can start immediately.
Frequently asked questions
- How many swim caps and race numbers do I need for a triathlon?
- Prepare one swim cap, bib number, and race bib strap for every registered participant. Add at least 5% spares, so a field of 100 athletes needs about 105 of each item.
- How early should I book kayaks and timing equipment for a triathlon?
- Book kayaks, water-safety equipment, and the time registration system at least 4 to 6 weeks before race day. Popular dates can require earlier reservations, especially when several events share the same season.
- What safety equipment is needed for a triathlon swim?
- Use visible swimming buoys, lane ropes where appropriate, life rings, kayaks, and paddles, with trained water-safety staff assigned to the course. Confirm the safety setup at least 1 week before the event and check it again on race morning.
- How many route signs and kilometer markers do I need?
- Place one route arrow at every turn and one kilometer marker for each marked kilometer on the walking course. Count the route in person, then add 10% spare arrows and cones for weather damage or last-minute changes.
