What to buy for a themed run
A themed run needs more than race bibs and medals. Youβll need clearly marked routes, equipment for registration and timing, safety supplies for volunteers, and a workable finish area. The shopping list below covers the physical items for the event, from bib straps and kilometer markers to crowd barriers, speakers and extension cords. Check quantities against your expected runner count, route length and number of volunteer posts before you place orders.

Tips
- Order one race bib and one bib strap per runner, then add a small reserve for replacements and late registrations. Sort the bib numbers before race day so registration volunteers are not searching at the tables.
- Plan route marking by location, not just by item count. Use kilometer markers at each full kilometer and have extra route arrows, cones and barrier tape available for turns, crossings and places where signs may be moved.
- Match safety equipment to the volunteer plan. Each traffic controller or route marshal needs a visible safety vest, while whistles and clipboards should be distributed before volunteers take their posts.
- Test the sound setup at the start and finish areas at least one day before the run. Check the speakers, wireless microphones, mixing desk, extension cords and power strips together rather than discovering a missing connection during registration.
- Prepare the finish area as a separate supply point. Keep medals on trays, trophies and prizes together, and place wristbands or other participant items where finish-line volunteers can hand them out without blocking the route.
Frequently asked questions
- How many race bibs and straps do I need for a themed run?
- Buy one bib and one strap for every registered runner, plus 5β10% extra for damaged items, replacements and late entries. For 100 runners, that means preparing at least 105 to 110 of each.
- How many kilometer markers should I buy?
- Use one marker for every full kilometer on the route. A 5-kilometer run needs five kilometer markers, plus extra route arrows for turns, the start, the finish and any confusing junctions.
- When should I check the themed run shopping list?
- Do a full stock check at least 7 days before the event, when missing equipment can still be ordered or borrowed. Repeat the check 1β2 days before the run and pack route-marking supplies separately.
- How much sound equipment is needed for a themed run?
- For one start and finish area, plan for speakers, at least one wireless microphone, a mixing desk, extension cords and power strips. Test every item together at least 24 hours beforehand and bring spare batteries for wireless equipment.
