What you need for a team-building walk
A team-building walk needs more than snacks and a printed route. You will need equipment for team challenges, clear route markers, materials for registration and enough food and drinks for the finish. Plan separate supplies for the walking route and the final venue, especially if the weather changes or the event runs into the evening. This shopping list helps you check the easily forgotten items before you go shopping and pack materials by team.

Tips
- Pack one complete activity kit per team, including assignment cards, markers, a clipboard, notepads and any rope needed for the challenges. Add a small spare set so one missing item does not stop the activity.
- Allow at least one reusable cup per participant, plus extra cups for the finish location. Bring coffee cups separately; they are easy to overlook when drinks are served at both the start and the venue.
- Use coolers and thermos flasks to keep drinks and hot coffee usable during the walk. Chill drinks before departure and keep food chilled until it is served rather than leaving it on the starting tables.
- Take route and safety equipment with you even on a short walk: cones, reflective vests, a compass and power banks. Pack LED lamps or string lights if teams may arrive after dark or the final location has limited lighting.
- Prepare the finish area as well as the route: bring buffet tables, serving platters, serving spoons, reusable plates and cutlery. Add extension cords only after checking the venue, and keep cutting boards and chefβs or bread knives separate from the walking equipment.
Frequently asked questions
- How much food and drink do I need for a team-building walk?
- For the walking part, plan at least 1 drink per participant and a small snack per person. For the first hour at the finish, allow 2 to 3 drinks per person, then adjust the total for the event length and weather.
- What should each team carry during a team-building walk?
- Give each team its own activity pack with assignment cards, markers, a clipboard and notepads. Include the materials for every planned challenge and prepare 1 spare pack for the whole group.
- What equipment do I need for a team-building walk in the rain?
- Bring a party tent or another covered setup for the start or finish, plus coolers that can stay closed. Prepare the alternative route materials in advance and keep route maps and activity cards in waterproof folders or bags.
- How many reflective vests and lamps do I need for the walk?
- Provide at least 1 reflective vest for every supervisor or route marshal, and add 1 for the person leading each group. Bring enough LED lamps for dark sections and charge all power banks before the event, preferably the day before.
