What you need for a supper club
A supper club needs more than ingredients for the menu. You also need enough plates, glasses, cutlery, cookware and serving pieces for every course, plus a practical way to keep drinks and dishes moving. Start with your confirmed guest count and add a small buffer before shopping. Check dietary requirements before buying ingredients, and arrange equipment early if you are cooking several courses in one kitchen.

Tips
- Count tableware by guest and course: plan one dinner plate, deep plate and dessert plate per person, plus at least one spare of each for breakage or last-minute changes.
- Allow two to three drinks per guest for the first hour, then one drink per person per hour. Chill wine, water and other drinks several hours before guests arrive.
- Match cookware to the menu before shopping. For a multi-course supper club, check that you have enough frying pans, cooking pots, baking dishes and trays to avoid washing items during service.
- Buy or borrow serving spoons, tongs and ladles for every shared dish. Missing serving utensils are easy to overlook and can delay plating once guests are seated.
- Leave coffee supplies until the end of your list, but check the coffee maker, cups and coffee spoons at least one day ahead. Dessert service often runs late, when replacing forgotten items is difficult.
Frequently asked questions
- How many plates and glasses do I need for a supper club?
- For each guest, plan one dinner plate, one deep plate and one dessert plate. Provide one water glass and one wine glass per person, plus about 10% extra tableware for breakage or unexpected guests.
- How much food and drink should I buy for a supper club?
- Base food quantities on the confirmed guest count and the recipes for each course, then add roughly 10% for seconds and preparation losses. For drinks, allow two to three per person in the first hour and one per hour after that.
- When should I do the shopping for a supper club?
- Buy shelf-stable ingredients, drinks and supplies two to three days ahead. Buy delicate produce, meat and fish one day before, then chill drinks and prepare sauces, vegetables and marinades according to the menu schedule.
- What kitchen equipment is needed for a multi-course supper club?
- At minimum, check that you have chefβs knives, cutting boards, mixing bowls, measuring tools, frying pans, cooking pots, baking dishes and trays. Do this at least one day before cooking so you have time to borrow or replace anything missing.
