Summer Run Shopping List
A summer run needs more than race numbers and a finish arch. Youβll need clear route markers, enough water and cups, shade, timing equipment, first-aid supplies and practical items for runners who arrive early or stay after the finish. Use this shopping list alongside the event plan to buy and pack everything before setup day. Check quantities against your expected runner count, volunteer team and route length rather than ordering at the last minute.

Tips
- Plan one bib number and at least two pins per registered runner, then add a small spare batch for damaged or forgotten numbers. Order medal ribbons and finisher medals early enough to allow for delivery and sorting.
- For a warm run, prepare at least 500 ml of water per runner for the finish area, plus extra for volunteers. Fill coolers and water jugs before runners arrive; drinks are often forgotten until setup is already underway.
- Mark every turn with route arrows and use kilometer markers at each full kilometer. Bring extra cones and barrier tape because wind, traffic measures and unclear corners usually require more marking than the first route check suggests.
- Pack first aid kits, ice packs, thermal blankets and towels where volunteers can reach them quickly, not inside a locked storage area. Keep a separate small kit at the start and finish in addition to anything carried along the route.
- Count power needs before bringing stopwatches, a megaphone or an arch with lighting or other equipment. Take extension cords and power strips only where approved power is available, and protect cables from walkways and wet ground.
Frequently asked questions
- What should I buy for a summer run?
- Buy bib numbers, pins, medals, route arrows, kilometer markers, cones, barrier tape and crowd barriers. Also prepare water, reusable cups, coolers, first-aid supplies, thermal blankets, ice packs and finish-line equipment such as a megaphone and stopwatches.
- How much water do I need for a summer run?
- Allow at least 500 ml per runner for the finish area, then add water for volunteers and anyone working on the route. For 100 runners, that means a minimum of 50 litres before adding a safety margin or water for hot conditions.
- How many safety pins do I need for race bibs?
- Plan two pins per runner as a minimum, so 200 pins for 100 runners. Add at least 10% extra because pins are easily dropped, bent or left at home.
- When should I order medals and race numbers?
- Order bib numbers, medal ribbons and finisher medals several weeks before race day, allowing time to check the delivery and sort everything by number. Finish shopping for disposable and consumable supplies at least two or three days beforehand.
