What You Need for a Soapbox Race
A soapbox race needs more than carts and a downhill course. Your shopping list must cover course control, participant safety, timing, repairs, registration, refreshments and shelter for spectators and volunteers. Plan equipment around the number of racers, starter groups and course length, then add a small reserve for breakages and wet weather. The items below fit the practical setup: marked start and finish points, protected edges, a staffed registration area and a repair station ready before the first run.

Tips
- Plan one bib number per registered racer, plus at least 10% extra for damaged or missing numbers. Keep the list at registration so starter groups can be checked quickly.
- Use one safety vest for every marshal and helper on the course, with at least two first aid kits: one at the start and one near the finish. Keep work gloves with the repair tools.
- Allow one traffic cone every 5β10 metres where you need to mark a boundary or hazard. Use barriers and hay bales at spectator areas and at the finish rather than relying on route ribbons alone.
- Prepare spare wheels and bolt sets before race day, not after the first cart fails. Put them with the tool cases in a clearly marked repair area and check that the tools fit the supplied hardware.
- Count seating and shelter for people who will stay between runs: one folding chair per seated guest and enough beer tables for registration, catering and drinks. Chill drinks in coolers before the first starter group arrives.
Frequently asked questions
- What safety equipment do I need for a soapbox race?
- Plan bike helmets for every racer, safety vests for every course marshal, work gloves for the repair team and at least two first aid kits. Add fire extinguishers, barriers, hay bales and traffic cones before opening the course to participants.
- How many spare parts should I buy for a soapbox race?
- Keep at least one spare wheel and one spare bolt set for every 10 carts, with a minimum of two of each for a small race. Inspect every cart before the event and place the spares and tool cases at the course-side repair station.
- What do I need to mark a soapbox race course?
- Use route ribbons and directional signs for the route, traffic cones for boundaries and crowd control barriers where spectators could move into the racing line. Check the full course at least 2 hours before the first run and replace anything that is loose or unclear.
- How much event equipment needs power?
- List every powered item, including the portable speaker, wireless microphones and LED lamps, before bringing extension cords and power strips. Test the complete setup at least 1 hour before registration and keep cables away from the course and walkways.
