What you need for self-defense training
A self-defense training session needs more than gloves and open floor space. You need enough mats for drills, extra padding for falls, clear timing equipment and a simple registration and refreshment setup. Buy or reserve consumables early, especially water, ice and disposable essentials if participants are not bringing their own. Check quantities against your final registration list before shopping, then bring all equipment to the venue in time for a safety check and room setup.

Tips
- Allow one training mat per active pair where possible, plus extra crash mats for falls and takedown practice. Do not wait until the day before to discover that the venue has fewer mats than expected.
- Prepare one pair of boxing gloves or focus mitts for each active pair, then add at least 10% spare equipment if the budget allows. Wipe shared gear before and after the session.
- Bring two interval timers or a timer plus a whistle so drills can continue if one device fails. Test the portable speaker, microphone, extension cords and power strips before participants arrive.
- Provide at least 1 litre of drinking water per participant for a session of up to three hours, with extra cups if people cannot refill their own bottles. Chill water and prepare ice at least 2 hours before the start.
- Keep stair cushions, first-aid supplies and clear floor space ready before warm-ups begin. Set up the mats and remove loose furniture, bags and cables at least 30 minutes before registration opens.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a self-defense training session?
- For a basic session, plan for training mats, crash mats, boxing gloves or focus mitts, marker cones and an interval timer. Add resistance bands, skipping ropes and stair cushions only when they match the training program.
- How many mats do I need for self-defense training?
- Plan on one training mat per active pair, so 10 pairs need about 10 mats. Add extra crash mats for falling drills and keep at least one clear route through the room.
- How much water should I buy for self-defense training?
- Allow 1 litre of water per participant for a session lasting up to three hours, plus around 10% extra. Set up water dispensers or coolers before participants arrive and prepare ice at least 2 hours beforehand.
- When should I buy supplies for self-defense training?
- Buy drinks, disposable tableware and any missing training equipment at least 2 days before the session. Do the final quantity check against registrations on the day before, then bring everything to the venue early enough for a 30-minute setup.
