Park run shopping list: what to buy and bring
A park run needs more than timing equipment and race numbers. You also need clear route markers, volunteer gear, first aid supplies, refreshments and a reliable way to keep the start and finish area organised. Plan drinks and snacks for the registered field, then add a small buffer for volunteers and late arrivals. Use this list alongside your route, registration and volunteer plan so nothing essential is left until race morning.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number and at least two safety pins per participant, then pack them in registration order. Keep a few spare numbers and extra pins for replacements on the day.
- Plan roughly two drinks per participant for the first hour, plus additional drinks for volunteers. Chill them the day before and bring coolers or containers that keep them cold.
- Buy route arrows and kilometre markers early enough to place them during the route check. Pack traffic cones and crowd-control barriers separately so volunteers can find them quickly.
- Allow one volunteer vest for every course marshal, finish-line helper and registration worker, with a few spare vests. Add clipboards, printed participant lists and route maps for each team lead.
- Charge stopwatches, walkie-talkies, phones and the sound system the evening before. Bring extension cords, power strips, rechargeable batteries and phone chargers rather than relying on venue equipment.
Frequently asked questions
- What do I need for a park run registration area?
- Prepare bib numbers, at least two safety pins per runner, participant lists, clipboards, pens and route maps. Sort the bibs before race morning and bring spare numbers and pins for changes or damaged items.
- How many drinks and snacks do I need for a park run?
- For the first hour, allow about two drinks per participant, then add extra supplies for volunteers and late arrivals. Prepare at least one snack portion per registered runner, with additional portions for the event team.
- How many volunteer vests should I buy for a park run?
- Provide one vest for every volunteer working on the route, at registration, at the finish or in the safety team. Add around 10% spare vests, so a team of 30 needs about 33 vests.
- When should I prepare the park run equipment?
- Charge electronic equipment and chill drinks the day before. Pack bibs, signs, barriers, first aid kits and communication equipment in labelled groups at least one evening before the run.
