What to Bring for a Nature Walk

A nature walk needs more than water bottles and comfortable shoes. This shopping list covers drinks, picnic supplies, route-marking equipment, safety items and cleanup gear for the walk and its meeting point. Plan quantities around your group size, then check the route and forecast again before you shop. Items such as coolers, route card holders, reflective vests and a first aid kit are easy to overlook until the day itself.

Tips

  • Plan at least one reusable cup, plate and set of cutlery per participant, plus 10% extra for losses or unexpected guests. Bring two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then add water for the rest of the route.
  • Use one cooler for drinks and one cool bag for picnic food if the walk lasts several hours. Pack serving platters, bread baskets, cutting boards and knives before leaving; these are commonly forgotten when food is prepared at home.
  • Prepare one route card holder per walking group and enough cones or arrows to mark confusing turns. Check the route once more on the day, because temporary closures or fallen branches can make printed directions unreliable.
  • Take at least one charged mobile phone and power bank per organiser, plus a flashlight for every two people expected to finish after dark. Keep emergency contacts with the registration materials rather than relying only on one phone.
  • Pack one first aid kit, disinfecting gel and waste bin or bag for the starting point. Add washing-up tubs if you are serving food or drinks, and take all waste with you after the picnic.

Frequently asked questions

How much water should I bring for a nature walk?
Allow at least 1.5 litres of water per person for a moderate walk, and more in warm weather or on a route without refill points. Bring extra water for the organisers and for basic cleanup.
What food and picnic supplies do I need for a nature walk?
For each participant, pack a portion of picnic food, one reusable plate, cup and cutlery set, plus around 10% extra. Bring serving platters, bread baskets, cutting boards, knives, coolers and water jugs for serving and transport.
How many first aid kits do I need for a group walk?
Take at least one complete first aid kit for a group staying together. For several walking groups or a remote route, give each group leader access to a kit and keep one additional kit at the starting location.
When should I buy supplies for a nature walk?
Buy non-perishable supplies 2 to 3 days before the walk and fresh food the day before. Check the forecast, route and participant numbers again the evening before, then adjust drinks, clothing-related gear and picnic quantities.
