What to Buy for a Multicultural Wedding

A multicultural wedding needs more than standard reception supplies. Alongside plates, glasses and serving pieces, you may need clothing accessories, ceremony candles, ritual items and clearly labelled menu materials. Plan quantities for the guest list, then add a small buffer for breakages, late arrivals and shared dishes. Use this shopping list with your cultural ritual plan so nothing essential is left to the last-minute shop.

Tips

  • Count each place setting as one dinner plate, dessert plate, cutlery set, water glass and napkin. Add 10% extra, or at least 10 spare settings for a wedding of up to 100 guests.
  • For a buffet, plan at least one serving spoon per dish and two serving platters for every 10 guests. Keep separate utensils available when dishes have different dietary requirements.
  • Buy or gather ceremony candles and ritual items at least 7 days before the wedding. Pack them in one labelled box so they can be set out immediately after the venue keys are collected.
  • Allow one name badge for every guest, plus 10 spare badges and pens for changes. Prepare the welcome sign, table numbers and menus at least 2 days before guests arrive.
  • Chill drinks in batches rather than all at once: refrigerate the first supply the night before and keep the next batch ready in coolers or a second refrigerator. Prepare snacks before the ceremony so food is available during arrivals.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to buy for a multicultural wedding?
Plan tableware, serving pieces, drinks, snacks, decorations, clothing accessories and all items required for the ceremony rituals. Check every category against the guest count and buy at least 10% extra for disposable or breakable items.
How many plates and glasses do I need for a wedding?
Start with one dinner plate, dessert plate, cutlery set and water glass per guest. Add wine, champagne, coffee or soup tableware only for the courses and drinks you will serve, then keep 10% extra available.
When should I buy wedding ceremony and ritual supplies?
Buy candles, ritual items and clothing accessories at least 7 days before the ceremony. Check the complete box again 2 days beforehand and pack it for transport before the venue setup begins.
How much extra wedding tableware should I order?
Order or collect 10% more than the confirmed guest count for plates, glasses and cutlery. For 80 guests, that means planning for 88 place settings, subject to the caterer's own equipment.
