What to Buy for a Fun Run
A fun run needs more than race numbers and medals. Plan supplies for registration, route marking, timing, refreshments, luggage, volunteers and the finish area. Buy drinks and snacks based on your participant count, then add a small buffer for late registrations and volunteers. Check power, lighting and weather protection before race day so equipment is ready when setup starts.

Tips
- Order one bib number and one race bib strap per registered runner, plus at least 5% extra for late entries, damaged numbers and replacements.
- Plan two to three drinks per participant for the first hour, with extra water for volunteers and anyone waiting at the start or finish. Chill the drinks the day before.
- Prepare one medal for every finisher and keep 5% additional medals available if your registration numbers may change before the event.
- Buy enough route arrows, barrier tape and traffic cones to mark every turn and hazard clearly; walk the route once more before race day to replace missing or moved markers.
- Pack separate volunteer supplies: clipboards, pens, stopwatches and whistles. Bring power banks, extension cords and power strips for speakers, lighting and registration equipment.
Frequently asked questions
- What do I need to buy for a fun run?
- Plan race numbers, bib straps, medals, route arrows, barrier tape, traffic cones, timing supplies, drinks and snacks. You may also need tents, tables, luggage bins, a speaker, a microphone and lighting for the start and finish area.
- How many drinks do I need for a fun run?
- Allow two to three drinks per participant for the first hour, then add supplies for volunteers and a 10% buffer. Adjust the total for hot weather, a longer route or limited access to water along the course.
- How many medals should I order for a fun run?
- Order one medal per expected finisher and add about 5% extra. For 200 expected finishers, that means 210 medals, giving you replacements and a small margin for changes.
- When should I buy fun run supplies?
- Order bib numbers and medals at least 3 to 4 weeks before the run. Buy drinks, snacks and disposable or reusable serving supplies during the final week, and chill the drinks the day before.
