What to buy for a farmers' bike ride
A farmers' bike ride needs more than bikes and refreshments. Plan supplies for the route, rest stops, registration point and finish area, with enough equipment to handle punctures, changing weather and different dietary needs. Drinks and coffee are easy to underestimate when riders spend several hours outside. This shopping list brings together serving equipment, cooling and hot-drink supplies, repair gear, safety items and backup power so the ride can run without last-minute trips to the shop.

Tips
- Plan about 750 ml to 1 litre of water per rider for a ride lasting several hours, then add extra drinks for volunteers and farmers at each rest stop. Use coolers for chilled drinks and water jugs for serving.
- For each rest stop, allow one reusable cup per participant plus at least 10% spare cups. Bring coffee cups, plates, cutlery and serving utensils even if the food is supplied by the farms.
- Pack one bike pump, repair kit and set of tire levers for every repair point, with spare inner tubes in common wheel sizes. A repair stand makes roadside work faster and keeps bikes stable.
- Provide a safety vest for every traffic marshal and volunteer working near the road, plus spare helmets for anyone using a borrowed or spare bicycle. Bring bike locks wherever spare bicycles are left unattended.
- Charge the portable speaker, microphone and power banks before departure and keep them together at the start or finish location. Check whether coffee machines, kettles and other equipment need a reliable power source before loading the vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water do I need for a farmers' bike ride?
- Allow 750 ml to 1 litre per rider for a ride of several hours, depending on the weather and route. Add 500 ml per volunteer and keep extra water at every rest stop.
- What bike repair supplies should I bring on a farmers' bike ride?
- Bring at least one pump, repair kit, pair of tire levers and spare inner tubes for each repair point. For a larger group, prepare one repair point per 25 to 40 riders so help is not concentrated in one place.
- How many cups and plates do I need for the ride?
- Plan one cup, plate and cutlery set per person, plus 10% spare. For 50 participants, that means at least 55 of each item, with additional coffee cups if coffee is served more than once.
- When should I buy supplies for a farmers' bike ride?
- Buy shelf-stable goods, disposable backups and repair supplies at least 7 days before the ride. Check fresh food, ice and the weather-dependent equipment again 24 hours before departure.
