What you need for a concert tour
A concert tour needs more than instruments and performers. Each venue must have the right stage furniture, sound equipment, lighting, cables, power supplies and front-of-house items ready before load-in. This shopping list covers the physical supplies behind the tour plan, from mixing consoles and microphones to chairs, glasses and work lights. Check quantities against each venueβs technical rider and audience capacity, especially when equipment travels between multiple dates.

Tips
- Check every venueβs technical rider at least 2β3 weeks before the show. Confirm whether the venue supplies speakers, monitors, microphones, lighting and a mixing console before buying or hiring duplicates.
- Pack cable reels, extension cords, cable trays and gaffer tape with the sound and lighting equipment. Keep at least one spare cable of each commonly used type for every show day.
- Plan stage furniture from the stage layout, not from the audience size. Count stage sections, steps, stools and chairs for each performer and leave clear access routes for setup and exits.
- Bring separate work lights for load-in and strike. Stage lighting may not be available while the crew is building the stage, so check that the number of work lights covers the full working area.
- Count drinking glasses and coffee cups for performers, crew and volunteers rather than ticket holders. A practical starting point is one cup per person per break, plus 10% spare stock for a touring day.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a concert tour?
- At minimum, plan for a mixing console, speakers, subwoofers, stage monitors, microphones, stands, DI boxes, cables and power leads. Add lighting equipment, stage furniture and work lights after checking each venueβs technical rider.
- How many microphones do I need for a concert?
- Count one microphone for every vocalist or microphone-based instrument used at the same time, then add at least 2 spare microphones for a touring show. Confirm the final number against the performersβ technical requirements 2β3 weeks before each date.
- How many spare cables should I bring on tour?
- Bring at least one spare XLR cable and one spare jack cable for each active cable type and length used in the show. For a multi-date tour, pack 10β20% more cables than the stage plan requires so one failed cable does not stop the set.
- What should I buy for the concert backstage and front of house?
- Plan chairs, foldable tables, coat racks, drinking glasses and coffee cups for the performers, crew and volunteers. Count these for the maximum number of people on site and add roughly 10% spare tableware before the first show.
