Computer course checklist
A computer course needs more preparation than booking a room and bringing laptops. You need a working setup for every participant, tested software and accounts, clear teaching instructions, and a registration process that captures attendance and dietary requirements. Start with the classroom, equipment and schedule, then confirm participants and prepare materials. On the day, allow time to connect every computer, test the network and projector, and welcome people before the course begins.

Tips
- Reserve the classroom and computer equipment early enough to test everything before invitations go out. Check that you have one usable laptop, charger, mouse and headset per participant, plus spare power strips and extension cords.
- Create the course schedule before writing teacher instructions. Include fixed times for the introduction, exercises, breaks and handouts so the teacher and participants know exactly what happens next.
- Close registrations several days before the course and confirm each place. Use the final participant list to prepare name badges, print the right number of handouts and follow up on dietary requirements.
- Test the software, user accounts, Wi-Fi and network switch on the actual laptops at least one day before the course. Do not wait until the morning itself to discover that an update, password or HDMI adapter is missing.
- Open the classroom at least 60 minutes before participants arrive. Connect the computers, presentation laptop, projector and screen, then set out materials and prepare coffee and tea before registering attendance.
Frequently asked questions
- How far in advance should I organise a computer course?
- Reserve the classroom and equipment at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead, especially if the course needs several laptops or a projector. Finalise the schedule and teacher instructions about 2 weeks before the course.
- How many laptops do I need for a computer course?
- Plan for one working laptop per participant, including its charger, mouse and any required headset. Have at least 1 spare laptop available for a group of up to 12 participants, or 2 spares for larger groups.
- When should I test the software and Wi-Fi?
- Test the software, accounts, Wi-Fi and network at least 24 hours before the course. Repeat a quick connection and projector check 60 minutes before participants arrive.
- How early should I arrive for a computer course?
- Open the classroom at least 1 hour before the start time. This gives you time to arrange tables and chairs, connect computers, test the screen and projector, lay out materials and prepare refreshments.
