Coastal Marathon Shopping List
A coastal marathon needs more than race numbers and medals. You will need supplies for registration, route marking, traffic control, timing, first aid support, refreshments and the finish area. Plan separate quantities for runners, volunteers and spectators, and allow extra stock for damaged signs, spilled drinks and late additions. This shopping list gives you the equipment and serving items to check before race day, so missing essentials do not become an early-morning problem.

Tips
- Order race numbers and start number bands as soon as registration closes, then keep at least 5% extra for replacements and last-minute changes.
- Prepare route markers in advance: allow one kilometer marker for each kilometer point, plus spare arrows, cones and course tape for exposed or windy sections.
- Count reflective vests and safety vests by role, not just by volunteer total. Traffic marshals and route teams need visible identification at every controlled crossing.
- Set aside separate bins for finish medals and prepare registration tables with clipboards, pens and hand tally counters before volunteers arrive. This prevents the first 30 minutes from being lost to setup.
- For refreshments, count reusable cups, plates, cutlery, coffee cups and pouring jugs for each stop. Keep a reserve of at least 10% because cups and serving items are easily misplaced during a long race.
Frequently asked questions
- What supplies do I need for a coastal marathon?
- You need race numbers, start number bands, finish medals, route arrows, kilometer markers, cones, barriers, course tape, timing equipment, radios, safety vests and finish-area supplies. You will also need tables, chairs, tents, waste bins and serving items for registration and refreshments.
- How many race numbers should I order for a marathon?
- Order one race number and start number band per registered runner, plus at least 5% extra. For 500 runners, that means preparing about 525 sets for replacements and late corrections.
- How much extra equipment should I bring for route marking?
- Bring at least 10% spare arrows, cones and course tape beyond the planned route quantity. Coastal wind and traffic control can move or damage markers, so pack replacements by route section rather than in one central box.
- When should I prepare the marathon shopping list?
- Make the first equipment check at least 4 weeks before race day and confirm consumable quantities after registration closes. Finish packing route and registration supplies 1 to 2 days before the event.
