What to Buy for a Bike Ride

A group bike ride needs more than bikes and helmets. This shopping list covers the repair gear, safety equipment, drinks, food and picnic supplies you may need at the start, rest stops and finish. Plan quantities around your group size and route length, then buy consumables at least one day ahead. Charge power banks, check spare lights and pack repair materials before participants arrive.

Tips

  • Plan at least 750 ml of water per rider for every two hours of riding, plus extra for warm weather. Bring water jugs for refills and coolers with ice packs so drinks stay cold at the picnic stop.
  • Allow two sandwiches and two pieces of fruit per rider for a ride lasting three to four hours. Prepare dietary-specific food separately and label it before packing the coolers.
  • Pack one spare inner tube for every five riders, with at least two in total. Add tire levers, bike pumps, multi-tools and chain oil so small mechanical problems do not stop the group.
  • Take one first aid kit for each main rest area, plus emergency blankets and whistles. Bring a charged power bank, the correct charging cables and spare bike lights for delays or poor visibility.
  • Provide one reusable cup, plate and set of cutlery per person, plus at least 10 percent extra. Two foldable tables, enough folding chairs and picnic blankets make serving food quicker at the finish.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for a group bike ride?
Plan 750 ml per rider for every two hours of riding in mild weather. For hot conditions or limited refill points, increase this to 1 litre per rider and bring extra water for the finish.
How many spare inner tubes should I buy for a bike ride?
Buy one spare inner tube for every five riders, with a minimum of two tubes for a small group. Match the tube sizes to the bikes taking part and keep tire levers and pumps with them.
What food should I pack for a three-hour bike ride?
Pack two sandwiches and two pieces of fruit per rider, with additional snacks for a longer or hilly route. Prepare the food the day before and keep perishable items chilled until the rest stop.
When should I buy supplies for a group bike ride?
Buy drinks, food and ice packs one day before the ride, then chill the drinks overnight. Check repair gear, lights, power banks and emergency supplies at least 48 hours beforehand so missing items can still be replaced.
