What to buy and bring for a bike ride
A group bike ride needs more than bikes and water bottles. This shopping list covers the supplies for registration, route marking, roadside repairs, refreshments, and a staffed rest area. Plan quantities from your final participant list, then pack separate boxes for the start, route support, and finish. Check repair equipment and lighting before shopping, because missing a pump, spare tube, or power bank is difficult to fix once riders have set off.

Tips
- Prepare one repair kit for every 20 to 25 riders, including a pump, spare inner tubes, tire levers, and bike multitools. Test each pump and check that the spare tubes fit the bikes most participants use.
- Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then add extra water for the planned distance and weather. Use coolers and water jugs at the rest area, and bring reusable cups if riders will stop together.
- Buy one bib number per registered rider, plus 5 to 10 spare numbers for late changes or damaged labels. Keep the numbers in registration order so the desk can check people in without searching through the full stack.
- Use route arrows at every turn, junction, and confusing section rather than estimating by distance alone. Pack extra arrows and tape or straps, and place a separate set in the vehicle covering the alternative route.
- Bring at least one charged power bank per organizer carrying a phone, and one walkie-talkie per key position if the group is spread out. Add bicycle lights and LED lamps when setup, return, or rest-area work may continue in low light.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water do I need for a group bike ride?
- Plan at least 750 millilitres to 1 litre per rider for a short ride, then add more for hot weather or a route without reliable refill points. For the first hour, two to three drinks per person is a useful shopping estimate when refreshments are served at the start.
- How many spare inner tubes should I bring on a bike ride?
- Bring one spare inner tube for every 10 riders, with a minimum of four for a small group. Add more if the route is long, remote, or uses several different wheel sizes, and confirm compatibility before the event.
- What do I need for bike ride registration?
- Prepare one bib number per registered rider, plus 5 to 10 spares, and set up a table, chairs, participant list, and pens. Keep the registration desk ready at least 30 minutes before the published start time.
- How many route arrows do I need for a cycling event?
- Count every turn and unclear junction on the route, then buy or print at least 10 to 15 percent extra arrows. Pack the signs by route section so organizers can place them quickly and still have spares for the alternative route.
