What to Buy for a Bike Ride

A bike ride needs more than bicycles and helmets. This shopping list covers the supplies that keep riders visible, hydrated and moving, from pumps and spare inner tubes to route signs, first-aid supplies and rest-stop equipment. Plan drinks and food around the length of the route, and prepare extra repair and communication gear for problems along the way. The easiest items to forget are small but essential: tire levers, power banks, emergency contacts and clear signage at turns.

Tips

  • Pack at least one bike pump and one repair kit for every support point, plus tire levers, chain oil and spare inner tubes. A single repair kit is not enough when riders spread out over a long route.
  • Allow roughly 2–3 drinks per person for the first hour, then about 1 drink per hour after that. Bring coolers, reusable cups and water jugs so drinks can be served at planned rest stops.
  • Use reflective vests for route staff and helpers, and bring route signs, cones and barrier tape for hazards and confusing turns. Pack spare signs because wind or passing traffic can move them.
  • Bring one charged mobile phone per key organiser, power banks and walkie-talkies if the group will be spread out. Keep printed participant details, emergency numbers and route information at the start and finish.
  • Prepare the rest stop before riders arrive: folding tables, a party tent, chairs, towels and reusable tableware are easy to overlook. Confirm access to power if you are using kettles or coffee machines.

Frequently asked questions

What supplies do I need for a group bike ride?
Plan for helmets, reflective vests, pumps, repair kits, tire levers, spare inner tubes and route signs. Add drinks, food, first-aid supplies, communication devices and rest-stop equipment for each planned stop.
How many drinks should I buy for a bike ride?
Allow 2–3 drinks per person for the first hour and around 1 drink per person for every additional hour. Buy extra for warm weather, delays and riders who need more than average.
How many spare inner tubes do I need for a bike ride?
A practical minimum is 1 spare inner tube for every 5–10 riders, with more for longer routes or rough roads. Keep them with repair kits and tire levers at the start, finish and support points.
What should I bring for bike ride emergencies?
Bring first-aid supplies, at least one pump and repair kit per support point, charged phones, power banks and printed emergency numbers. Prepare these items at least one day before the ride and check batteries before departure.
