What you need for a beer brewing workshop

A beer brewing workshop needs more than malt, hops, and yeast. This shopping list covers the brewing setup, measuring tools, fermentation supplies, tasting service, drinks, snacks, and basic event furniture. Check quantities against the number of participants before shopping, then reserve specialist equipment early. Keep tasting beer chilled, separate it from the brewing area, and have safety information ready before guests arrive.

Tips

  • Plan one complete workstation for every small group, including measuring cups, stirring spoons, thermometers, and access to the brewing vessels. This prevents participants from waiting for one shared tool.
  • Reserve the brew kettle, gas burner, gas cylinder, mash tun, filter tun, wort cooler, and fermentation vat at least 1–2 weeks before the workshop. Specialist equipment is harder to replace at short notice.
  • Bring at least one sample glass per participant, plus 10–15% extra for breakage or rinsing. Drinking glasses should be kept separate from tasting glasses so the tasting setup stays organised.
  • Chill the tasting beer and other drinks for at least 12 hours before the session. Pick up ice or prepare coolers on the day if the venue has limited refrigerator space.
  • Pack the small items that are easy to overlook: funnels, a sieve, brewing hoses, water seals, graduated cylinders, extension cords, plates, cutlery, and coffee cups. Check them off while loading the car, not after reaching the venue.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a beer brewing workshop?
For the brewing process, plan a brew kettle, gas burner, gas cylinder, mash tun, filter tun, wort cooler, fermentation vat, water seal, hoses, funnels, and a sieve. Add measuring equipment such as a digital scale, thermometers, pH meter, hydrometer, and graduated cylinders.
How many tasting glasses do I need per person?
Allow one sample glass per participant and add 10–15% extra. For 20 participants, prepare at least 22–23 sample glasses, with a few spare glasses available for breakage or replacements.
How far in advance should I reserve brewing equipment?
Reserve the main brewing equipment 1–2 weeks before the workshop. Confirm the booking again 2–3 days before the event and check that the burner, gas cylinder, cooling equipment, and fermentation vessel are all included.
When should I chill the beer and other drinks?
Chill the tasting beer and drinks for at least 12 hours before the workshop. If the venue has limited refrigerator space, use coolers and add ice on the event day so everything remains cold until tasting time.
