What you need for a baking competition
A baking competition needs more than flour, sugar and a working oven. You also need enough measuring equipment, baking tins, serving plates, protective clothing and clearly labelled ingredients for every contestant. Buy fresh products as close to the event as possible, portion shared ingredients in advance and keep drinks chilled before participants arrive. Use the plan below to check what must be bought, borrowed or confirmed with the venue.

Tips
- Count one complete set of measuring tools, mixing bowls and basic utensils per workstation where possible. If equipment is shared, plan a clearly marked equipment station and allow at least 10 minutes between rounds for washing and returning items.
- Buy disposable or reusable cake plates for every entry, plus at least 10% extra for damaged plates, judging samples and last-minute entries. Keep separate serving spoons and knives for each category to reduce cross-contact.
- Prepare participant packs at least one day before the competition. Include the race number, rules, category information and any ingredient or equipment instructions so registration does not become a bottleneck.
- Create the allergen overview while checking the shopping list, not after shopping. Label opened packets and portioned ingredients immediately, and keep a separate set of utensils available for participants with dietary requirements.
- Do the main shop one or two days before the event, then buy fresh products on the day or the evening before. Chill drinks in advance and check that every oven, baking tray and oven mitt is available before participants arrive.
