Archery Competition Checklist
Use this checklist to organise an archery competition in the right order, from booking the venue and setting the match date to preparing the range and scoring materials. It covers the details that are easy to leave until the last week, including permits, insurance, participant confirmations, volunteer roles, and backup equipment. Allow time to check every bow, arrow, target, safety barrier, and power requirement before competitors arrive.

Tips
- Set the rules and shooting distances before opening registration. Participants need to know the format, categories, number of ends, scoring method, and distances before they commit.
- Complete the safety plan before marking out the range. Check the position of safety nets, bollards, cones, and barrier tape, then make sure the shooting line and waiting area are clearly separated.
- Confirm judges and volunteers at least 1β2 weeks before the competition. Assign specific roles for registration, range control, scoring, equipment checks, catering, and announcements rather than relying on general help.
- Prepare more than the exact number of scorecards and target sheets. Print the participant list and keep spare cards, pens, replacement strings, spare parts, and an arrow puller at the scoring and equipment areas.
- Check practical conditions the day before and again on the morning itself. Review the weather forecast, cool drinks, test laptops and printers, charge power banks, and bring extension cords and power strips if results or announcements need electricity.
Frequently asked questions
- How early should I start organising an archery competition?
- Start at least 8β12 weeks before the match date. Venue availability, permits, insurance, judges, registrations, catering, and equipment checks all need time, especially if the event has several shooting ranges.
- How far apart should archery targets be?
- There is no single distance for every competition, because it depends on the rules, bow category, age group, and target format. Set the distances in the competition rules first, then measure and mark every shooting lane before building the ranges.
- How many volunteers do I need for an archery competition?
- For a small competition, plan on at least 4β6 volunteers in addition to the judges: registration, range safety, scoring, equipment support, catering, and announcements. Add people when competitors shoot in multiple groups or ranges at the same time.
- When should I send participant confirmations?
- Send confirmations after registrations and dietary requirements have been processed, ideally 1β2 weeks before the competition. Include the arrival time, shooting schedule, rules, distances, venue instructions, and anything participants need to bring.
