Weightlifting tournament checklist

A weightlifting tournament runs smoothly when decisions are made in the right order. Start with the venue, competition rules and weight classes, then open registration and appoint judges, announcers and volunteers. Before publishing the schedule, verify every athlete, dietary requirement and starting group. In the final days, check the scale, bars, plates, collars, forms and sound system, and brief the setup team so registration and lifting can start on time.

Tips

  • Reserve the competition venue before opening registration, and confirm parking, the first-aid contact and the space needed for the platform, warm-up area, registration desk and spectator seating.
  • Set the match rules and competition classes before sending invitations. Athletes need the rules, weigh-in details and class structure early enough to register in the correct group.
  • Do not publish the starting groups until registrations are processed and participants are confirmed. Build the schedule around weigh-ins, equipment checks, lifting sessions and realistic changeover time.
  • Calibrate the competition scale shortly before the event and keep the spare scale available. Check every bar, collar and plate size, including the 1.25 kg and 2.5 kg plates needed for small attempts.
  • Brief volunteers and the setup team on registration, bib numbers, scoreboards, judges’ forms, catering and waste collection. Put the microphone, speakers and mixer through a sound check before athletes arrive.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I organise a weightlifting tournament?
Start venue booking, rules and competition classes at least 8 to 12 weeks before the tournament. Open registration once those details are fixed, leaving the final 7 to 10 days for confirmations, schedule changes and equipment checks.
What equipment do I need for a weightlifting tournament?
Plan for a competition platform, Olympic and training barbells, plates from 1.25 kg to 25 kg, collars, crash mats, magnesium, a calibrated competition scale and a spare scale. You also need scoreboards, competition forms, bib numbers and pens for the judges.
When should I publish the weightlifting starting groups?
Publish starting groups after registrations close and every participant is confirmed, usually 5 to 7 days before the event. Send the schedule with arrival, weigh-in and lifting times so athletes know when to report.
How many judges and volunteers are needed for a weightlifting meet?
Assign three judges for each lifting session, plus a meet official or announcer and enough volunteers for registration, equipment, scoring and athlete flow. For a small tournament, plan at least 4 to 6 volunteers and add more when sessions run simultaneously.
