What to Buy and Bring for a Walk

A well-prepared walk needs more than water and a marked route. This shopping list covers the practical items for the start and finish area, rest stops, route safety, registration and participant packs. Plan supplies for the number of registered walkers, then add a small buffer for late sign-ups and damaged or missing items. Check the forecast before shopping: a party tent, coolers, thermos flasks and lighting can make a noticeable difference on the day.

Tips

  • Prepare one route pack for each volunteer team, including route arrows, cones, barrier tape, warning signs, a safety vest, a clipboard, pens and a walkie-talkie. Add spare signs for sections that may be moved or damaged.
  • Allow at least 2 reusable cups per walker if drinks are served at both the start and a rest stop. Bring extra cups and serving jugs so one set can be washed or kept at the finish.
  • For a rest area, provide at least 1 cooler or insulated container per drink station and enough ice packs to keep drinks cold for the full walking period. Use thermos flasks and kettles where hot drinks are offered.
  • Pack one first aid kit at the starting location and one with the route team. Add flashlights, reflective armbands and LED lamps if any part of the walk may take place in low light.
  • Do not leave printed materials until the last day: prepare one route map per participant pack plus spare copies for volunteers, and protect every outdoor map in a plastic route sleeve.

Frequently asked questions

What should I buy for a walking event?
Plan for route safety, registration, refreshments and the start area. The core supplies include route arrows, cones, warning signs, safety vests, first aid kits, maps, reusable cups, coolers, tables and a party tent. Match quantities to your participant and volunteer numbers, then add 5–10% spare materials.
How much water do I need for a group walk?
Allow about 0.5 to 1 litre of drinks per person for a walk of up to 3 hours, depending on the weather and route. Add extra for volunteers and place drinks at the start, finish or a rest stop. In warm weather, increase the amount and keep it cold with coolers and ice packs.
How many route signs do I need for a walk?
Use one clear arrow or warning sign at every turn, crossing and decision point, then add signs before and after complicated junctions. Walk the route in advance and count the points rather than estimating. Buy or prepare at least 10% spare signs in case of wind, damage or route changes.
What do I need at a walk registration desk?
Bring a table, chairs, participant lists, pens, clipboards, route maps and plastic route sleeves. Prepare one clipboard and pen for each registration or information point, plus at least 10% extra printed lists and maps. Set up the desk at least 60 minutes before the first walkers arrive.
