What to buy and bring for a walk
A walk needs more than drinks and a printed route. You also need clear route markers, registration supplies, safety equipment and a simple setup for the start and finish. Plan one starter pack per participant, plus extra materials for volunteers and last-minute registrations. Check the route before shopping so you know how many arrows, signs and traffic cones are needed. This list helps you gather everything before the day instead of discovering missing supplies during setup.

Tips
- Prepare one starter pack for each registered participant, then add a small buffer for late registrations. Keep participant lists, name stickers and wristbands together at the registration table.
- Allow enough route signage for every junction, turn and bottleneck. Bring spare route arrows and barrier tape because signs can be moved, damaged or missed in poor weather.
- Plan drinks for the first hour at two to three servings per person, with extra water for volunteers working at traffic posts. Chill drinks before setup and bring coolers to keep them cold.
- Bring one first aid kit for the start or finish area and make sure route volunteers know where it is. Safety vests, whistles and a megaphone should be distributed before participants leave.
- Pack setup equipment separately from serving supplies: tables, chairs, party tents, extension cords and power banks are often needed before coffee, tea and food can be prepared.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water and drinks do I need for a walk?
- Plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then add more for longer walks or warm weather. Bring extra water for volunteers and keep drinks in coolers until serving.
- How many route arrows do I need for a walking event?
- Count every turn, junction and route bottleneck during a test walk, then add at least 10% spare arrows. Bring directional signs, traffic cones or barrier tape where an arrow alone may be unclear.
- What should be in a walk starter pack?
- Prepare one pack per participant with the materials listed in your plan, and make 5 to 10% extra packs for late registrations or damaged items. Store packs near the registration table for quick distribution.
- When should I buy and prepare supplies for a walk?
- Buy durable items and route materials at least one week ahead. Chill drinks, print lists and maps, prepare starter packs and check the route again during the final 24 hours.
