What you need for a veterans bike ride
Use this shopping list to prepare a veterans bike ride from registration through the final rest stop. It covers the items people often arrange too late: visible route signs, spare tubes, working radios, participant bibs and enough cooling capacity for drinks. Check the route and expected rider count before buying quantities. If the ride may continue into low light, prepare lamps, reflective vests and power banks before event day.

Tips
- Plan one visible route arrow or sign for every decision point, then add spare signs for turns that may be missed. Pack cable ties, tape or another fixing method even though they are easy to overlook.
- Bring at least one bike pump and one tyre repair kit to each staffed rest stop, plus spare inner tubes in the common wheel sizes used by participants. Test the pumps before loading them.
- Give every participant a bib number and secure it with a bib strap before the start. Print the participant list and keep a second copy with the registration team in case the printer fails.
- Match walkie-talkies to the route team, start area and rest stops, and charge every device the evening before. Keep mobile phones and power banks available as a backup rather than relying on one communication method.
- Use coolers for drinks and snacks, and check that tables, waste bins and chairs fit at each rest stop. Chill drinks before the ride and prepare thermos flasks if hot drinks are part of the plan.
Frequently asked questions
- How many spare inner tubes do I need for a veterans bike ride?
- Start with at least 1 spare inner tube for every 10 registered riders, with a minimum of 4 tubes for a small ride. Buy extra tubes if the route is long, remote or likely to include many older bicycles.
- How many route signs should I buy for a bike ride?
- Count every junction, turn and confusing section on the tested route, then add about 10% spare signs. Prepare the full set at least 1 day before the ride so volunteers can sort and load them by route section.
- When should I chill drinks for the bike ride?
- Move drinks into coolers or a refrigerator at least 12 hours before the start. Fill the coolers shortly before departure and keep a separate supply ready for rest stops.
- How many reflective vests are needed for a veterans bike ride?
- Provide one vest for every volunteer working near roads, at least 1 per rest stop and enough for the lead and support riders. Confirm the volunteer count 2 to 3 days before the event so missing sizes can still be replaced.
