What you need for a SUP relay
A SUP relay needs more than boards and paddles. You need enough safety equipment for every person on the water, clear race-marking gear, and a dry way to store numbers, schedules and registrations. On land, plan for shelter, tables, power and refreshments so participants can change, check in and wait between heats. Use this list to check purchases and hire items before event day, then confirm deliveries and equipment collection in advance.

Tips
- Count one SUP board, paddle and leash for every person racing at the same time, then add spare paddles for breakage or loss. Check the equipment technically before participants arrive.
- Provide one life jacket per participant on the water, plus visible rescue equipment such as life rings, throwing hooks and whistles. Keep this gear accessible at the start and finish areas, not packed away in a storage crate.
- Bring enough buoys, anchor lines, cones, a start line and a finish line to mark the route clearly. Set the course before registration opens so you can spot drifting or missing markers while there is still time to adjust them.
- Keep team bibs, bib numbers, race schedules and registration materials in waterproof bags. Prepare a separate dry set of numbers and paperwork in case the first set gets wet during setup.
- Plan the shore area as carefully as the water: party tents, tables, seating, storage crates and clothing racks prevent wet kit from blocking the registration desk. Charge the speaker, microphone, megaphone and power banks the day before, and pack extension cords if mains power is available.
Frequently asked questions
- How many SUP boards do I need for a relay?
- You need one board for each person racing at the same time. For example, a four-person relay with one active paddler per team needs four boards, plus spare paddles and ideally one spare board if your equipment provider can supply it.
- How many life jackets are needed for a SUP relay?
- Prepare one correctly sized life jacket for every participant who may enter the water, including reserves and late replacements. Check the final registration count at least 24 hours before the relay and keep a few additional sizes available if participants have not confirmed their measurements.
- What race-marking equipment should I buy for a SUP relay?
- Use competition buoys with anchor lines to mark the course, plus a start line, finish line and cones for the shore area. Set out the complete course at least 60 minutes before the first heat so you can test visibility and positioning.
- When should I buy drinks and snacks for a SUP relay?
- Buy non-perishable snacks and serving supplies several days beforehand, then chill drinks on the day before or the morning of the relay. Base quantities on the confirmed participant count and keep refreshments available during registration and between heats.
