What you need for a sunrise walk
A sunrise walk needs more than coffee and a planned route. Before participants arrive, you need a clear registration point, visible route markers, lighting for low visibility and a safe rest stop with drinks and breakfast. This shopping list covers the practical supplies for preparing, guiding and closing the walk. Use your registration numbers to calculate quantities, then add a small reserve for unexpected guests, spills and delays.

Tips
- Plan at least 2 reusable cups per participant if you will serve both hot drinks and water. Bring extra cups for the rest stop, where people may refill after walking.
- Prepare 2 to 3 drinks per person for the first hour, including water, coffee and tea. Use coolers for chilled drinks and thermos flasks for hot drinks; chill everything the day before.
- Use one headlamp or LED lantern at each dark section, turn, registration point and rest area. Test all lights and charge power banks before the evening before the walk.
- Pack route signs, cones and rope in separate bundles for each section of the route. Bring one printed route map on a clipboard for every person guiding or checking the walk.
- Set aside one first aid kit, reflective vest and emergency blanket for the registration point, plus a charged mobile phone. Keep the safety equipment accessible rather than packed under breakfast supplies.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water do I need for a sunrise walk?
- Plan at least 0.5 litres of water per participant for the walk, plus extra for the rest stop. Add roughly 10% more if the route is long, the weather is warm or refill access is limited.
- How many cups and plates do I need for a sunrise walk?
- Count one breakfast plate and one set of cutlery per participant, then add 10% spare tableware. Plan 2 reusable cups per person when you serve both hot drinks and water.
- When should I buy supplies for a sunrise walk?
- Buy dry goods, route signage and safety supplies at least 3 days beforehand. Buy or collect fresh breakfast items and chilled drinks the day before, so the final morning is limited to setup and preparation.
- How many lights are needed for a sunrise walk?
- Use at least one headlamp or LED lantern at every dark turn, crossing, registration point and rest area. Check the route after sunset and add one spare light for every 5 planned lights.
