What to Bring for a Sunrise Tour

A sunrise tour needs more than bikes and a route. You will be starting in low light, often before shops are open, so prepare breakfast, hot drinks, visibility equipment and route markers in advance. Plan one reusable cup, plate and full cutlery set per participant, plus a small reserve. The list below covers the supplies for registration, riding safely in groups and serving breakfast when everyone returns.

Tips

  • Plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then add extra water for the route. Fill thermos flasks and insulated dispensers before participants arrive, because replacing hot drinks during an early start is rarely practical.
  • Provide one rechargeable bike light per cyclist and keep headlamps available for setup and registration. Charge all lights and power banks the night before, and pack spare batteries for equipment that is not rechargeable.
  • Prepare one printed route map per group, plus at least two spare copies. Pack route arrows separately and place them only after checking the route, so signs do not get forgotten at the starting point.
  • Bring one reflective vest for each person leading or guiding a group, and keep the first aid kit, emergency blankets, bike pumps and tire repair kits together. Check these supplies before registration rather than once the ride has started.
  • Buy breakfast supplies for every registered participant and add 10% extra for late additions or larger portions. Set out plates, reusable cups and cutlery before the safety briefing so serving breakfast does not delay the departure.

Frequently asked questions

How many reusable cups and plates do I need for a Sunrise tour?
Plan one cup, plate, knife, fork and spoon per registered participant, plus 10% extra. For 30 people, prepare 33 of each item so replacements are available.
How many bike lights are needed for a sunrise tour?
Provide one rechargeable bike light per cyclist and keep at least two spare lights available for failures or late arrivals. Charge them fully the night before and test them before registration.
When should I prepare the breakfast and hot drinks?
Set out dry breakfast items and tableware before participants arrive. Fill thermos flasks and insulated dispensers shortly before departure, ideally within 30 minutes of serving, to keep drinks hot.
How many route maps and route arrows should I print or buy?
Prepare one route map for every riding group, two spare maps and enough arrows for every planned turn or decision point. Pack the arrows separately and check the complete route at least one day before the tour.
