What you need for a student bike ride
A student bike ride needs more than bikes and helmets. Plan supplies for registration, route marking, rest stops, minor repairs, traffic control and the finish area. The shopping list covers drinks, reusable serving items, safety equipment and practical gear such as pumps, repair kits and spare inner tubes. Check power, cooling and transport needs before the event, because these are often arranged too late.

Tips
- Plan drinks for the full route, not just the finish. As a working estimate, allow two to three drinks per participant for the first hour, then add one drink per person for each additional hour.
- Pack at least one bike pump and one repair kit for every 25 riders, plus spare inner tubes in several common sizes. Keep tire levers with the repair kits so a puncture can be handled without extra shopping.
- Prepare one safety vest and one walkie-talkie or charged mobile phone for every escort or route team. Add reflective armbands and traffic cones before the route briefing, not on the morning of the ride.
- Use route arrows and cones at every turn or hazard, with a few extras for wind or damage. Store them in a foldable cart wagon so volunteers can place and collect them efficiently.
- For a start or finish area with refreshments, count reusable cups, plates and cutlery by participant, then add at least 10% extra. Arrange coolers, tables, power strips and extension cords before chilling drinks or setting up coffee equipment.
Frequently asked questions
- What drinks should I buy for a student bike ride?
- Plan two to three drinks per participant for the first hour and one additional drink per person for every extra hour. Bring extra water for warm weather and keep drinks chilled in coolers before riders arrive.
- How many spare inner tubes do I need for a group bike ride?
- Start with at least one spare inner tube for every 10 riders, plus a few additional tubes for larger groups. Carry them with bike pumps, repair kits and tire levers so minor punctures can be fixed on the route.
- What safety equipment is needed for a student bike ride?
- Prepare bike helmets, safety vests, reflective armbands and traffic cones for route staff and participants as required. Have at least one communication device for each escort team and enough route arrows to mark every turn, with spares.
- When should I buy and prepare the bike ride supplies?
- Buy durable equipment and repair supplies at least one week before the ride. Check drinks, cooling equipment, route markers and charged communication devices 24 hours before departure, then pack transport items the evening before.
