Street market shopping list

A street market needs more than stalls and tables. You will need serving supplies for food and drinks, reliable power equipment, lighting, payment devices and practical gear for moving and securing everything. Buy or collect disposable essentials only after you know the number of exhibitors and expected visitors. Check power access early, chill drinks before opening, and prepare one labelled package per stand so setup does not become a last-minute search.

Tips

  • Plan drinks and cups by attendance, not by stall count. As a starting point, allow two to three drinks per visitor during the first hour, then add extra stock if the market runs longer.
  • Count serving items separately for food and hot drinks. Provide at least one plate, bowl, cutlery set or coffee cup per expected serving, plus a 10% reserve for spills and replacements.
  • Check every exhibitor’s power requirement at least one week before the market. Match coffee machines, kettles and hot drink urns to available outlets, and keep extension cords, power strips and cable reels ready.
  • Prepare lighting and batteries before the event, especially if stalls are covered or the market starts early. Charge rechargeable batteries and test battery lamps and card machines the day before.
  • Pack equipment by stand and label each package with the exhibitor’s name or pitch number. Keep hand trucks, ladders, flashlights and walkie-talkies in a separate organiser’s kit for setup and closing.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for a street market?
At minimum, plan stalls or tents, tables, seating where needed, payment devices, lighting, power equipment, serving supplies and waste arrangements. Final quantities depend on the number of exhibitors, visitors and food stalls, so confirm registrations before buying.
How many cups and plates do I need for a street market?
Start with one cup, plate, bowl and cutlery set per expected serving, then add about 10% extra. For 200 expected servings, that means preparing roughly 220 of each relevant item rather than ordering exactly 200.
When should I buy supplies for a street market?
Buy durable equipment and serving supplies at least one week ahead, then check the complete stock two days before opening. Buy or chill drinks close enough to the event that they remain cold, while leaving time to replace missing items.
How much power equipment does a street market need?
List every powered device by stall and check the available outlets at least seven days in advance. Keep one tested extension cord or cable reel for each separate power area, plus spare power strips and rechargeable lighting for outages.
