Six-Hour Race shopping list
A six-hour race needs more than bikes and a start line. You need visible route markings, reliable timing, a repair setup, power for the finish area and enough food and drinks for participants and volunteers. This shopping list covers the practical equipment used from registration through the final finish. Check quantities against your course length, participant count and volunteer rota, then buy refrigerated items close enough to race day that they can be chilled in time.

Tips
- Plan route-marking supplies by section, not just by entrance and finish. Count every arrow, warning sign, cone and barrier needed at junctions, crossings and confusing turns, then add at least 10% spare markers.
- Prepare one repair point with a stand, pump, tool case, tyre levers and spare inner tubes. Keep a second pump and a small set of tools mobile so a breakdown does not stop a volunteer from reaching a rider.
- Allow a separate bib or race number for every registered participant, plus at least 5% spare numbers for replacements and late corrections. Keep them dry and sort them in registration order before race morning.
- For a six-hour event, give timing equipment its own power plan: test the time registration system and laptop at least 24 hours beforehand, and pack extension cords, power strips and work lights as backups.
- Buy and chill drinks and refrigerated food no later than the day before if storage allows. Set aside separate supplies for volunteers, because course marshals and repair staff may not be able to leave their posts during the busiest hours.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a six-hour race?
- You need route arrows, warning signs, cones and barriers for the course, plus bibs or race numbers, timing equipment, radios and a megaphone. Add a repair stand, pumps, tools and spare inner tubes for rider support.
- How many race numbers should I buy for a six-hour race?
- Buy one number for each registered participant and add at least 5% spare numbers. For 100 riders, that means 105 numbers, before allowing for separate numbering systems or duplicate formats.
- How much food and drink do I need for a six-hour race?
- Base the order on the confirmed participant and volunteer count, then plan supplies for the full six-hour operating period rather than only the start. Chill drinks by the day before where possible, and keep a separate reserve for volunteers.
- When should I test the timing and power equipment?
- Test the time registration system, laptop, printer and connections at least 24 hours before the race. Set up extension cords, power strips and work lights before registration opens, with enough spare cable to keep walkways clear.
