What to buy for a senior cycling tour
A senior cycling tour needs more than bikes and refreshments. Pack supplies for route marking, minor repairs, changing weather, communication and a clearly organised rest stop. Buy drinks and food with the riding time in mind, and arrange serving equipment before the day itself. The list below covers the practical items that are easy to overlook, from spare inner tubes and power banks to coffee equipment, tables and bicycle racks.

Tips
- Plan around 500β750 ml of water or other drinks per rider for each hour on the route, then add extra for the rest stop and warm weather. Keep drinks in coolers so they are ready when riders arrive.
- Allow one spare inner tube for every five to eight bicycles, plus at least two bike repair kits and two pumps for a group ride. Check that the valves match the bikes before buying replacements.
- Put route arrows and traffic cones in the vehicle the day before, not with the catering supplies. Bring roughly one route arrow for each junction or unclear turn, with a few extras for replacements.
- Give each volunteer a reflective vest and a charged mobile phone; for larger groups, use walkie-talkies between the start, rest area and finish. Pack power banks and test the megaphone before participants arrive.
- For a coffee stop, provide at least one cup, plate and cutlery set per participant, plus 10% extra. Bring two or more thermos flasks or enough coffee machines and kettles to serve the group without a long queue.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water do I need for a senior cycling tour?
- Plan 500β750 ml per rider per hour of cycling, then add at least 20% extra for warm weather or delays. A two-hour ride for 20 people therefore needs 20β30 litres before adding drinks for the rest stop.
- How many spare inner tubes should I buy for a group bike ride?
- Buy one spare inner tube for every five to eight bicycles, with a minimum of four for a small group. Check tyre and valve types at least one week before the tour so unsuitable tubes can be replaced.
- What safety equipment is needed for a senior cycling tour?
- Take one first aid kit, emergency blankets, reflective vests for volunteers and route-marking equipment. Check helmets, pumps and repair kits two to three days before departure, and charge phones and power banks the evening before.
- How much coffee and tableware should I bring?
- Bring one cup, plate and cutlery set per participant plus 10% spare. For a group of 30, pack at least 33 sets and enough coffee, hot water and serving space for the full group at the rest stop.
