What to buy for a running challenge
A running challenge needs more than medals and race numbers. You will need supplies for registration, route marking, water stations, timing, first aid, volunteer coordination and the start and finish area. Plan quantities around the number of runners, volunteers and spectators, then add a small reserve for damaged signs, missing safety pins and extra drinks. This checklist helps you spot items that are often bought too late, especially cups, power equipment and route safety materials.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number, at least two safety pins and one participant information pack per runner. Buy 5β10% extra bibs and pins for replacements and last-minute registrations.
- For each water station, provide enough disposable cups for every runner to take two drinks, plus 10β20% extra. Arrange water taps, coolers and waste collection before route setup begins.
- Allow at least one route arrow or direction sign at every turn and junction, then add a reserve of 10% for unclear corners or damaged signs. Bring afzetlint and verkeerskegels for hazards and restricted areas.
- Set aside one walkie-talkie for each key coordination point, such as the start, finish, water stations and route team. Charge them the day before and pack charging stations, extension cords and power strips together.
- Buy or collect refreshments for the finish area early enough to check dietary requirements. Coffee pots, thermos flasks, reusable cups, plates, cutlery sets, snijplanken, bread knives and serveertangen are easy to overlook when attention is on the race route.
Frequently asked questions
- How many safety pins do I need for a running challenge?
- Plan two safety pins per runner for attaching a bib number. Add 5β10% extra, so a 100-runner event needs about 210β220 pins.
- How many cups should I buy for a running event?
- Allow two disposable cups per runner at each water station, plus 10β20% extra. For 150 runners and one station, that means roughly 330β360 cups.
- When should I buy route signs and safety equipment?
- Buy or collect route arrows, afzetlint and verkeerskegels at least one week before the challenge. Check the full route and sort the signs two to three days before setup.
- How many walkie-talkies are needed for a running challenge?
- Provide one walkie-talkie for each essential coordination point and the route lead. A small challenge usually needs 4β6 units for the start, finish, water station and route team.
