What you need for a remarriage wedding

A remarriage wedding often combines a formal meal with a more relaxed reception, so the shopping list needs to cover both. Plan tableware for every seated guest, plus serving pieces for the buffet, cake and drinks. Check whether your venue already provides tables, chairs, glasses or coffee equipment before buying or hiring anything. Do the final stock check at least one week ahead, then chill drinks, collect flowers and confirm deliveries during the last two days.

Tips

  • Count dinner plates, forks, knives and water glasses for every guest, then add 10% spare pieces. Dessert plates and coffee cups are easy to overlook when the meal and cake are served separately.
  • Plan the drink setup by service point: wine glasses, champagne glasses, water glasses, coolers and ice containers. Arrange for drinks to be chilled several hours before guests arrive, rather than relying on the refrigerator at the venue.
  • For a buffet, allow at least one serving spoon or pair of tongs per dish, plus serving platters and covered trays for food that must be carried or protected. Confirm the catering equipment list before ordering duplicates.
  • Keep cake equipment separate from the dinner service: a cake table, cake knife, dessert plates and coffee spoons should be ready before the cake is collected. Pick up the cake late enough to keep it stable, but leave at least 60 minutes for delivery and setup.
  • Make a venue-by-venue inventory 7 days before the wedding. Check tables, chairs, buffet tables, gift and cake tables, clothes racks, coffee machines, kettles, thermos flasks and food warmers, then assign someone to receive deliveries and pick up the venue keys.

Frequently asked questions

How many plates and glasses do I need for a remarriage wedding?
Start with one dinner plate, dessert plate, fork, knife and water glass per seated guest, then add 10% spare pieces. For example, 50 guests means 55 of each basic item; wine and champagne glasses depend on which drinks you serve.
When should I buy or check the wedding tableware?
Check the venue inventory and catering list at least 7 days before the wedding. Finish buying or hiring missing items 3 to 5 days ahead so there is time to resolve delivery problems.
How much ice do I need for the wedding drinks?
Allow roughly 1 kilogram of ice per guest for a reception where drinks are kept cold in coolers and ice containers. Buy or collect it on the day, ideally 2 to 4 hours before guests arrive.
What do I need for serving a wedding cake and coffee?
Prepare a cake table, cake knife, dessert plates, coffee cups, coffee spoons, a coffee machine or kettle, and thermos flasks if service continues for more than 30 minutes. Set these items out at least 30 minutes before the cake is served.
